Reporting a possible Aboriginal place or object

Discovery of human remains

If suspected human remains are discovered, you must contact the Victoria Police and the State Coroner’s Office immediately. If there are reasonable grounds to believe that the remains are Aboriginal, the Department of Sustainability and Environment’s Emergency Co-ordination Centre should be contacted on 1300 888 544.

The Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 requires that the discovery of Aboriginal cultural heritage places or objects on any public or private land in Victoria be reported to Aboriginal Affairs Victoria. What do you do if you think you have found an Aboriginal cultural heritage place or object on your land, or any other land in Victoria?
To report a possible Aboriginal heritage place or object use our Preliminary Report Form (PDF 134 kb).

See the AAV mini-posters series for general descriptions on Aboriginal heritage places and objects.

Recording an Aboriginal place or object

AAV has created Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Register forms, a detailed set of forms designed to describe the type and content of a particular Aboriginal cultural heritage place or object. The cover sheet and 11 ‘component’ record sheets include details on the location, environmental setting, recorder, Aboriginal community views, condition and management recommendations. These forms are only suitable for experienced heritage professionals.

AAV have developed standards to assist the recording of Aboriginal places and objects. These standards will explain the concepts behind the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Register and describe the types of information necessary to accurately document Aboriginal cultural heritage places and objects in Victoria. It is recommended the online version of the Standard be used to ensure accuracy and currency of information.

Only original copies of these forms obtained from Aboriginal Affairs Victoria should be lodged with the Heritage Registrar.
