Taungurung Appointment – Traditional Owners Managing Cultural Heritage

The appointment of the Taungurung has marked a significant milestone for the Aboriginal Heritage Council. Traditional owners are now managing cultural heritage across more than half of Victoria. “This is an important step towards the full implementation of the Aboriginal Heritage Act 2006 which confirms Aboriginal people as the primary guardians, keepers and knowledge holders of Aboriginal cultural heritage.” Read the media release (PDF 46 kb) or (Word 47 kb).
Wathaurung Aboriginal Corporation – New RAP

The Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council has appointed a new Registered Aboriginal party (RAP) to protect and manage the Aboriginal cultural heritage of Victoria, for an area including Geelong, Surf Coast and Ballarat. Wathaurung Corporation is the eighth RAP appointed by the Council under the Act since its commencement in May last year. “This decision brings to 48% the area of Victoria for which a RAP has been appointed”, Ms Bourke said. Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation Registered as RAP

The Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council has appointed a new Aboriginal party to protect and manage the Aboriginal cultural heritage of north central Victoria. Dja Dja Wurrung is the seventh RAP appointed by the Council under the Act since its commencement in May last year. This decision brings to 45% the area of Victoria for which a RAP has been appointed to manage cultural heritage. Wurundjeri Tribe Land Compensation and Cultural Heritage Council – New RAP for Melbourne and Surrounds

The Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council appointed a new Registered Aboriginal Party (RAP) to protect and manage the Aboriginal cultural heritage of metropolitan Melbourne and surrounding areas. “From today, Aboriginal cultural heritage in many parts of Melbourne and surrounding areas will be managed by Wurundjeri Inc, an organisation of Traditional Owners representing the Woi wurrung people,” said Ms Bourke, speaking after the Council meeting on 22nd August. Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Corporation appointed as RAP

The Deputy-Chair of Victoria’s Aboriginal Heritage Council, Tim Chatfield said that after careful consideration, the Council had appointed Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC) as a Registered Aboriginal party (RAP). The decision means that cultural heritage activities across much of Gippsland will now be handled by the local Aboriginal community.
