Reconciliation

2 men at Sorry Day in MelbourneReconciliation aims to improve the relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians by raising awareness of the importance of Indigenous people’s history, culture and their significant contribution to society.

Aboriginal Affairs Victoria supports this through its vision that:

  • Indigenous Victorians will have equality of opportunity and outcomes with non-Indigenous Victorians
  • All Victorians will recognise, respect and celebrate the contribution of Indigenous Victorians to Victorian community life
  • All Victorians will appreciate the unique Aboriginal cultural heritage of Victoria

Reconciliation in Victoria

The Victorian Government is continuing reconciliation by working with Indigenous people to improve their quality of life, to create opportunities and effect positive outcomes. An important part of this work is the Victorian Indigenous Affairs Framework (VIAF) a comprehensive and sustained approach to addressing the disadvantage and inequality experienced by the Indigenous community.

The Victorian Government has provided more than $1.3 million for Reconciliation Victoria over eight years to build closer links between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Victorians.

A woman at Sorry Day in MelbourneThe plan now is for Victoria’s Indigenous community and the Victorian Government to continue the work to improve the day-to-day circumstances of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Victoria and to embed the principles and vision of Reconciliation Victoria into every aspect of our response.

National Reconciliation week takes place annually in late May, coinciding with two important dates - the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum and the historic 1992 High Court judgment on the Mabo case.
